MUMBAI: Former Member of Parliament from Haldia, Lakhan Seth was arrested by Crime Investigation Department (CID) of West Bengal from Mumbai’s Chembur area on Saturday in connection with a 2007 case.
Mr Seth was arrested along with his two party colleagues Amiya Sahoo, a former MLA and Ashok Guria Local CPI-M leader Amiya Sahu and Asoke Gudia, facing several charges relating to the violent recapture of Nandigram by CPM cadres in November 2007. They were produced before a local court that gave them transit remand so that they could be taken to West Bengal.
On February 27 this year, a court in Midnapore had issued arrest warrants against Seth and 71 others after they failed to appear before it to face a charge sheet filed by the CID. They were wanted in connection with the disappearance of seven villagers in Nandigram in November 2007 when CPM executed a violent recapture of the area from local farmers who had refused to give up their land for a chemical hub and had ousted the administration and the CPM for nearly nine months.
