CHANDIGARH: Baba Ramdev’s supporter Raj Bala, who died on Monday after being in coma for over three months, was cremated at village Bhutana, near Sonepat in Haryana, 200 kms from here on Tuesday. Raj Bala (51) was hospitalized for 114 days, after she suffered a crippling spinal injury on the night of June 4 at the Ramlila Grounds during Yoga guru Ramdev’s hunger strike.
Apart from Baba Ramdev, BJP leaders Sushma Swaraj and Smriti Irani attended her cremation ceremony. Calling Rajbala a “martyr” who had sacrificed her life, senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj and Ramdev attacked the Centre, saying the Government which had all along denied use of any brutal force during the police action needs to answer how the woman had died. “ON behalf of the country I pay my tributes to her and promise that our fight against corruption will continue and those responsible for her death will be brought to justice…the government at center are directly responsible for her death which makes them corrupt financially and criminals,” Baba Ram Dev said.
“A day after the incident, (Union Minister) Kapil Sibal said that there was not even a single cane charge, not even a single person was injured… if no one was injured, how did Rajbala die?” Swaraj said. “Rajbala was a disciple of Ramdev and had gone to Delhi on his call. I met the doctors at the G B Pant hospital who told me that her spine had broken… Her murder will become a turning point to shake this government,” Swaraj added. Demanding that Rajbala be awarded the status of ‘martyr’, Ramdev said, “She sacrificed her life for 121 crore Indians. Her death was not ordinary, but an extraordinary sacrifice.”
Family of the deceased have alleged that she received injuries during the police lathicharge, while the doctors claim that she had been suffering from Osteoporosis, which results in the thinning of bone tissue and loss of bone density. While police and family debate over whether Bala suffered injuries due to stampede or lathi charge, the Gurgaon-based yoga instructor who also had been a former councillor of the Gurgaon Municipal Council, suffered fracture and dislocation of cervical vertebraes with paralysis of all four limbs after the midnight crackdown on Ramdev’s supporters. In her three months in the hospital, Bala underwent three surgeries.
The Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha was present along with other BJP leaders including Smriti Irani and Haryana’s BJP president Krishan Pal Gujjar to attend Rajbala’s last rites. INLD chief Om Prakash Chautala was also present .
On the night of June 5, there were more than 30,000 people present at the Baba Ram Dev’s camp where he was on a hunger strike, demanding that the government act faster and more vigorously to bring back black money or undeclared income stashed by Indians in foreign bank accounts. After a sudden mid-night interruption fromt he police to disperse the crowd Baba Ramdev disappeared from stage and over 70 people were reportedly injured.
